What is Krampus?
A figure from Central European folklore, particularly prevalent in the Alpine regions, Krampus, is a horned, anthropomorphic figure, that traditionally accompanies St. Nicholas during the Christmas season to punish misbehaving children.
Abstract
This website explores the history and cultural significance of Krampus, tracing its origins to pre-Christian Alpine traditions and examining its modern resurgence in Austrian culture. I will also discuss how the character has evolved, from being suppressed by the Catholic Church to re-emerging as a popular cultural icon in contemporary Austria. This resurgence is analyzed through the lens of traditional Krampus runs and festivals, which have gained newfound popularity and international attention. Discussion of how Krampus has regained appeal will be highlighted, noting its role in preserving cultural heritage, countering the commercialization of Christmas, and providing a thrilling, communal celebration.
